  • Description

A big rally and march in Hanoi last Thursday (2 September) marked the 31st anniversary of the independence of Vietnam.

SYNOPSIS: The rally was held in Ba Dinh Square, site of the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Cenotaph. Among Vietnamese leaders present were President Ton Duc Thang and Defence Minister, General Vo Nguyen Giap. The rally was addressed by the Prime Minister, Pham Van Dong, who called on the Vietnamese to build up their country through "diligence and frugality".

The parade marked the declaration of independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam at the end of World War Two. The first post-war independent government was headed by Ho Chi Minh, who led the country until his death in 1969. The anniversary had also been marked by celebrations in Peking and several other Chinese cities. Diplomatic representatives of a number of countries also attended the Hanoi rally.

Referring in his speech to the achievements of the Vietnamese people in post-war economic restoration and development, the Vietnamese Premier said the people were turning their "revolutionary heroism", displayed in fighting, into creative labour in the building of a rich and powerful country, and had recorded laudable successes in economic and cultural development.
