  • Description

A LEBANESE BUSINESS WAS TURNED BACK BY EAST GERMAN POLICE AT THE BRANDENBURG GATE, OCT 5, WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO CARRY A MESSAGE OF PEACE THROUGH THE WALL THAT DIVIDES BERLIN.

MR. EDMOND KHAYAT SET OUT FROM HIS HOTEL IN WEST BERLIN FOR A THREE-MILE TREK TO THE BRANDENBURG GATE ON THE EAST-WEST BERLIN BORDER. HE WAS CARRYING A WOODEN CROSS, 20FT LONG AND WEIGHING 80 POUNDS, INSCRIBED WITH THE MOTTO "HUMANITY" IN ENGLISH AND ARABIC. HE ALSO CARRIED A PLACARD READING: "AFTER 2,000 YEARS MANKIND IS STILL GROANING UNDER OPPRESSION AND WAR, STILL CARRYING THE CROSS. WHEN WILL PEACE AT LAST REIGN ON EARTH. WHEN WILL PEACE REIGN. WHEN?"
A CROWD HAD GATHERED ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE BRANDENBURG GATE WHEN KHAYAT ARRIVED WITH HIS BURDEN. AS HE CROSSED THE BOUNDARY AND APPROACHED THE GATE, EAST GERMAN POLICE WITH SUB-MACHINEGUNS WALKED UP TO HIM AND PUSHED HIM BACK TOWARDS THE BRITISH SECTOR, FOILING HIS ATTEMPT TO TAKE HIS MESSAGE TO EAST BERLIN.
