QUESTION: "You know the two principal figures rather well, I believe, Khrushchev and Eisenhower ..."

ANSWER: "I know them - both of them."

Q.: "What is the feeling going to be, would you think, between the two at the Summit?"

A.: "I should think it'll be a bit frigid, a little chilly, when the two meet. But I should say, knowing Khruschev, he really wants to ... and he must for his internal purposes in Russia. I should think he'll get over it if the other people are quite friendly. But he'll start the Summit 15-love in his favour - because of this incident. Great pity - you must have, at the start, love-all."

Q.: "Wouldn't you think perhaps, Lord Montgomery, that russia has been spying in just the same way as America has been spying?"

A.: "I should very much doubt whether Russian planes have been flying over the United States. No fear - they wouldn't - not with this distant early warning set-up and that sort of thing. I think they would be shot down if they were."

Q.: "Is this then an indication that America is more prepared than Russia?"

A.: "Well, I wouldn't like to say that at all. I think that Russia probably knows all she wants to know about the western world - I should think so - I've no reason to think she doesn't."
