  • Description

West Germany pushed aside Spain's challenge to reach the semi-finals of the European Nations Cup with a deserved 2-0 win on Saturday (22 May).

West Germany drew 1-1 in the first leg in Madrid so the Spaniards had to avoid defeat to stand a chance of staying in the competition.

In fact Spain almost took the lead when Del Bosque hit the underside of the crossbar after a skilful cross had eluded West German goalkeeper Sepp Maier, but the West Germans countered with an exciting goal by their blonde striker Willi Hoeness, who swung a rightfoot volley past Angel in the Spanish goal after 17 minutes.

The second goal two minutes before half-time was a rather scrappy affair. German captain Franz Beckenbauer playing with his usual dominance came up from defence to find an attacking position, collect a short pass and shoot for goal. Angel managed to palm it away but only to Toppmoeller, the man West German fans are hoping will replace their former world famous striker Gerd Mueller. Toppmoeller accepted the easy chance, but the Spanish defenders complained bitterly as one of the linesmen had flagged for offside only to be overruled by Mr. Wurtz, the French referee.

There were no goals in the second half but Spain, for whom Cacon and Churruca were outstanding, tried hard to put their side back into the game. They had bad luck too for Pirri headed home in the closing minutes but the goal was ruled offside.

West Germany will play Yugoslavia in the semi-final next month.
