  • Description

THE WORLD'S FIRST VERTICAL TAKEOFF TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT WAS DEMONSTRATED TO THE PUBLIC NEAR MUNICH YESTERDAY. THE AIRCRAFT, CALLED THE DO-31 V/STOL, WAS CONSTRUCTED BY ONE OF WEST GERMANY'S BIGGEST AVIATION COMPANIES, DORNIER-WERKE. THE V/STOL (VERTICAL/SHORT TAKEOFF AND LAND) IS POWERED BY BRITISH ENGINES. THE TWO LIFT/THRUST ENGINES CLOSE TO THE FUSELAGE ARE BRISTOL-SIDDELEY PEGASUS UNITS. AT THE TIPS OF THE TRANSPORT'S WINGS ARE TWO PODS, EACH CONTAINING FOUR ROLLS ROYCE LIFT ENGINES.

THE DORNIER TRANSPORT IS AN EXPERIMENTAL ONE, BUILT UNDER CONTRACT TO THE WEST GERMAN MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. THE AVIATION COMPANY HAS BEEN WORKING SINCE 1959 ON EXPERIMENTS FOR A VERTICAL TAKEOFF TRANSPORT. WHETHER THE NEW PLANE WILL EVER GO INTO PRODUCTION DEPENDS ON THE WEST GERMAN DEFENCE BUDGET SO ITS FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN. THE MAKERS SAY SUCH AN AIRCRAFT WOULD BE INVALUABLE IN THE BATTLE-ZONE AS IT WOULD BE ABLE TO LAND AND TAKE OFF IN ROUGH TERRAIN NEAR THE FRONT LINES. IT COULD BE USED AS A TROOP AND TRANSPORT CARRIER AS WELL AS FERRYING OUT CASUALTIES.

    ITS SPECIFICATIONS ARE: SPAN - 64FT (18 METRES); LENGTH - 70 FT 6 INCHES (20.70 METRES); HEIGHT - 25 FT 9 INCHES (8.80 METRES); WING AREA - 602 SQ. FEET (57 SQ.METRES); TAKE-OFF WEIGHT - 51,800 LBS (27,500 KGS).
