  • Description

United States Senator Edmund Muskie, in Japan on a six-day anti-pollution tour, met with Prime Minister Tanaka on Wednesday (June 6).

The ??? who played a leading role in the United States ??? 1970, is in Japan at the invitation of the Japan ??? Agency. He has been making public speeches in Tokyo and Osaka on the commemoration of Japan's environment week and Tuesday's (June 5) United Nation's first Environment Day.

Senator Muskie's speeches and lectures in Tokyo have been aimed at illustrating the dangers to the environment of a completely automobile-orientated society. He as pointed out that as long as Americans and Japanese choose pollutive automobiles, their survival is very much at risk.

But, he maintains, if the peoples of these two industrial and economic giants choose to enforce and insist upon legislation that will allow the use only of specially designed, pollution-free cars, they are then manufacturing the means of their survival - and the survival of their environment - with their own hands.

But, he has said, if technology cannot develop cars which are almost totally free of pollution, peoples of advanced nations like the United States and Japan will be obliged to choose in the future the survival of the automobile or the survival of themselves. And he emphasised the need of wider participation of the public in tackling the pollution problem. Involvement of the public, he maintained, is essential through public hearings, and through public participation in the agencies which write the legislation.
