  • Description

Thousands of workers -- estimated at 400,000 by organisers and at about 224,000 by police -- took part in a huge rally in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park on Wednesday 1st May to protest inflation and to demand the removal of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) government headed by Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka.

The rally -- organised by Japan's four main opposition parties including the Japanese Communist and Socialist Parties -- was part of the nationwide protest movement by an estimated seven million workers and opposition party supporters to celebrate International labour Day or 'May Day'.

After gathering in Yogogi Park and listening to speeches by party leaders, the demonstratore marched in six different groups to various Tokyo locations including the Diet (Parliament) Building.

May Day comes in the midst of Japan's most prolific period of closely-packed national holidays -- known to the Japanese as 'Golden Week' -- and observers at the Tokyo rally noted that the holiday spirit appeared to be more prevalent than political and economic ideale.
