  • Description

WORLD CHAMPION RACING DRIVER JACKIE STEWART WON THE RACE OF CHAMPIONS AT BRANDS HATCH, KENT, TODAY (SUNDAY) IN THE NEW BRITISH MARCH FORMULA ONE CAR.

JACK BRABHAM, THE 43-YEAR-OLD EX-WORLD CHAMPION, HAD LED THE RACE FOR MOST OF THE 50 LAPS WHEN ENGINE TROUBLE SLOWED HIM DOWN INTO FOURTH PLACE BEHIND JOCHEN RINDT AND DENNY HULME.

BRITAIN'S GRAHAM HILL, STILL PARTLY CRIPPLED AFTER BREAKING BOTH LEGS IN THE AMERICAN GRAND PRIX LAST YEAR, FINISHED FIFTH IN HIS LOTUS.

FROM THE START, 30-YEAR-OLD STEWART SET A CRACKING PACE IN THE NEW MARCH 701, WHICH MADE ITS RACE DEBUT IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND PRIX TWO WEEKS PREVIOUSLY. HIS AVERAGE SPEED OF 109.11 M.P.H.(175.59 K.P.H.) BEAT HIS OWN RACE RECORD OF 108 M.P.H. (174 K.P.H.) SET LAST YEAR.

THEN BRABHAM, IN A REPCO BRABHAM-FORD, TOOK THE LEAD ON THE 11TH LAP. HE BROKE THE BRANDS HATCH LAP RECORD THREE TIMES DURING THE RACE, EVENTUALLY REDUCING IT TO ONE MINUTE 25.8 SECONDS, ONE SECOND FASTER THAN THE OLD RECORD HELD BY AUSTRIAN JOCHEN RINDT.

BUT IN THE 48TH LAP, IGNITION TROUBLE STRUCK BRABHAM'S CAR WHEN HE WAS EIGHT SECONDS AHEAD OF STEWART, AND THE AUSTRALIAN WAS FORCED INTO THE PITS TO HAVE A NEW IGNITION BOX FITTED - SO LETTING STEWART, RINDT AND NEW ZEALANDER HULME THROUGH INTO THE FIRST FOUR PLACES.
