    AN ESTIMATED 20,000 PEOPLE DIED IN THE ABORTIVE UPRISING.

    IN THE ABSENCE OF PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA, UNDER-GOING MEDICAL TREATMENT IN PARIS, VICE-PRESIDENT CALVIN TSIEBOREVOLT IN THE CAPITAL.

    PUBLIC DEMONSTRATORS AND CELEBRATIONS WERE FORBIDDEN AND NIGHT CLUBS AND DANCE WERE CLOSED. GOVERNMENT TROOPS PATROLLED THE AREA WHERE THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE WHILE SECURITY FORCES GUARDED THE RADIO BUILDING AND FOREIGN EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES.

    THE 1947 UPRISING, DOMINATED BY THE HOVAS, WHO RULED THE HUGE INDIAN OCEAN ISLAND BEFORE IT BECAME A FRENCH COLONY IN 1986, WAS AIMED AT WINNING INDEPENDENCE. BUT THE MARCH UPRISING WAS PUT DOWN BY THE FOLLOWING JUNE. THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC BECAME AN INDEPENDENT STATE ON JUNE 26, 1960.
