Background: The 1979 International Codasur motor rally began in Buenos Aires on Saturday (21 July). Competitors motor through six countries in Latin America before returning to Argentina where the rally ends in San Miguel de Tucuman at the foot of the Andes.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina's President General Jorge Rafael Videla joined rally officials as the first car left the control point on the stroke of midnight. Many of the top manufacturers including the French Renault company have entered teams for this year's rally.

Privately entered cars among the seventy-one competitors included the Ford Falcon Sprint of Andres Vertone.

The first two stages take the competitors north into Uruguay, Brazil, paraguay and eventually Bolivia. The rally then moves west into Chile before turning south for the last of the seven thousand kilometre course on the rugged mountain roads crossing the Andes mountains.

The Peugeot 504 has proved its reliability over the years, and the French company has entered a strong team led by top professional driver Jean-Claude Lefevre. The rally is organised by the Argentine Automobile club with the help of other motoring organisations along the route. Total prize money is well over one hundred and fifty thousand U.S. dollars, and officials are hoping that next year the Codasur event will count towards the World Rally Championship.
