    The Kyo sect of Buddism -- founded in Japan 38 years ago and expanding rapidly in California -- is using golf as a religious experience and a way to find peace of mind.

    Its followers believe that in nature, all life is art and all human activity creative. Golf, its followers say, is the natural way to express this philosophy because the golfer competes against himself and is thus able to reach the highest form of physical dexterity and spiritual fulfilment.

    Now, the sect is planning to carve a seven-thousand yard golf course out of the Santa Monica Mountains, with its headquarters nearby. One member of the sect explains how the philosophy has helped him:
