Background: Tens of thousands, tears streaming down their faces, lined the Avsnida de Mayo in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, on Tuesday (2 July) as an artillery caisson bore the coffin of Juan Domingo Peron to the National Assembly building.
President Peron, who had dominated Argentine politics for 30 years, died on Monday (1 July) aged 78 of heart failure brought on by a bronchial infection.
His coffin, draped in the sky-blue and white Argentine flag on which his army General's peaked cap and sword were placed, was taken in the morning from the Presidential villa in Clivos to Buenos Aires' municipal Cathedral where a funeral mass was read.
His body will lie in state in the National Assembly until Thursday (4 July). It will then be taken back to the chapel at the Presidential residence for a burial service, which will be attended by several Latin American Presidents.
