Background: TROOPS OF THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL ARMY'S FIRST DIVISION ARE REPORTED TO BE SECURE IN THE CITY OF NSUKKA AFTER REPELLING ATTEMPTS BY SECESSIONIST TROOPS TO DISLODGE THEM.

FEDERAL FORCES ARE NOW IN CONTROL OF THE VITAL ROAD BETWEEN NSUKKA AND THE CAPITAL OF THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN PROVINCE.

THE NIGERIAN ARMY IS NOW FIGHTING SECESSIONIST FORCES IN AN AREA BETWEEN ENUGU AND THE TOWN OF ONITSHA, STILL HELD BY SECESSIONISTS. THEIR LATEST VICTORY HAS BEEN THE REPORTED CAPTURE OF AWKA, ON THE NIGER RIVER, FROM SECESSIONISTS.

THE FEDERAL MILITARY COMMANDER AT ENUGU, LIEUTENANT COLONEL DANJUMA SAID 2000 TROOPS OF THE EASTERN NIGERIAN 57TH. BRIGADE HAD ATTACKED NSUKKA AND TWO NEARBY VILLAGES SEVERAL DAYS AGO. FEDERAL FORCES WERE REPORTED TO HAVE CAPTURED A NUMBER OF WEAPONS FROM THE SECESSIONISTS, INCLUDING HOME-MADE ROCKET LAUNCHERS.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE LEADER OF EASTERN NIGERIA -- OR BIAFRAN AS IT CALLS ITSELF -- LIEUTENANT COLONEL OJUKWU CLAIMED HIS FORCES HAD RECAPTURED NSUKKA AND THE VILLAGES OF OPI AND UKEHE FROM FEDERAL TROOPS. BIAFRAN OFFICIALS HAVE ALSO DENIED REPORTS THAT AWKA FELL TO FEDERAL FORCES AT THE WEEKEND.
