  • Description

Denny Hulme of New Zealand, driving a McLaren M8F, on Sunday (13 June) won the opening race of the 10-event Canadian-American (Can-Am) Challenge Cup series for sports cars, held over 200 miles (322 kms) at Mosport Ontario.

Hulme's victory was worth 17800 dollars (GBP5,400 sterling) and McLarens driven by Americans Peter Revson and Lothar Motschenbacker were second and third. Scotsman Jackie Stewart retired with a broken axle before the race was half way through.

A large crowd at Mosport Park, just outside Toronto, watched Hulme drive at an average speed of 109 m.p.h. (175 km per hour) to win the race. There was one near miss in the race when a car cut across Peter Revson's McLaren.

SYNOPSIS: The McLaren team has dominated the five-year-old Can-Am series for the past four seasons, and by the time Sunday's race at Mosport Ontario ended, it appeared New Zealander Denny Hulme would carry off the opening race honours again.

Eighteen cars competed in Sunday's race and the only serious threat to Hulme and team-mate Peter Revson was Jackie Stewart, who had earlier said he is going to concentrate on the ten-race series this year.

Jackie Stewart took the lead when a car blocked Hulme, and held it until a broken axle forced him to retire. Peter Revson had a near miss when a competitor cut in front early in the race.

After Stewart dropped out, the leading McLaren cars moved a complete lap ahead of the remaining cars. Hulme was first over the finishing line and Revson was about 7 seconds behind. The victory was worth 17800 dollars.
