  • Description

DR NAMDI AZIKIWE, WHO WAS PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA AT THE TIME OF THE MILITARY COUP SIX WEEKS AGO, TODAY FLEW TO LAGOS FROM BRITAIN WHERE HE HAS BEEN CONVALESCING AFTER AN ILLNESS.

DR. AZIKIWE WAS IN BRITAIN AT THE SAME TIME OF THE MILITARY TAKE-OVER. AT THE TIME HE DECLINED TO SAY WHETHER HE STILL REGARDED HIMSELF AS PRESIDENT, OR WHETHER HE HAD BECOME MERELY A PRIVATE CITIZEN. BUT AN OFFICIAL AT THE NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSION IN LONDON SAID THAT THE NEW MILITARY GOVERNMENT DID NOT REGARD HIM AS PRESIDENT.
