  • Description

FOUR BOMB BLASTS IN ROME AND MILAN KILLED 13 PEOPLE AND INJURED NEARLY 100 OTHERS YESTERDAY (12 DECEMBER).

THE POLICE LATER DETAINED FOUR SUSPECTED ANARCHISTS. THE FOUR WERE DETAINED AS POLICE INVESTIGATED WHAT INTERIOR MINISTER FRANCO RESTIVO CALLED 'PROFESSIONAL TERRORIST' CIRCLES AFTER THREE EXPLOSIONS IN ROME, ONE AT A BANK AND TWO NEAR THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR, WHICH OCCURRED ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH A HUGE BLAST IN MILAN'S NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL BANK IN WHICH 13 PEOPLE DIED AND 78 WERE INJURED.

THE MILAN EXPLOSION, WHICH DEVASTED THE MAIN HALL OF THE BANK, CAME AS THE BUILDING AND THE PIAZZA FONTANA OUTSIDE WERE CROWDED WITH ABOUT 300 FARMERS, LANDOWNERS, AND BUSINESSMEN WHO TRADITIONALLY DO BUSINESS THERE ON FRIDAYS.

PRESIDENT SARAGAT SAID IN A STATEMENT THAT THE 'GHASTLY ATTACKS' WERE A RING IN A CHAIN OF TERRORIST ATTACKS THAT MUST BE BROKEN AT ALL COSTS.

FRIDAY'S ATTACKS WERE THE THIRD - AND BY FAR THE MOST SERIOUS - SERIES OF BOMB ATTACKS IN ITALY THIS YEAR.

THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT HAS NOW BANNED ALL PUBLIC POLITICAL ASSEMBLIES AND APPEALED FOR NATIONAL UNITY 'SO THAT THE INFAMOUS CRIMINALS MAY BE ISOLATED AND THE LAW APPLIED IN ALL ITS RIGOUR'.
