Background: Rotterdam, May 5, - and it was the start of a balloon contest, organised by the Hagus Balloon Club.

The balloons - two Dutch, two American, four Belgian, one French and one Swiss - took off one by one in a north-westerly breeze.

Winner of the contest was American competitor Mrs. Constance Woolf, who was accompanied by film star Joan Fontaine - one of the aeronautical de Havilland family of Britain. Before the race Miss Fontaine said "The winner is the balloon which goes farthest east in eight hours".
