  • Description

THE STATE FUNERAL OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL TOOK PLACE IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY).

THE WORLD PAID ITS FINAL TRIBUTE TODAY TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, WHOSE COURAGE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY MADE HIM A SYMBOL FAR BEYOND THE COUNTRY HE LED TO VICTORY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

THOUSANDS SILENTLY LINED THE STREETS OF LONDON AS THE SLOW-MARCHING FUNERAL PROCESSION MADE ITS WAY FROM WESTMINSTER TO ST.PAUL'S CATHEDRAL.

MORE THAN 7,000 TROOPS ESCORTED THE FLAG-DRAPED COFFIN ON THE TWO AND A HALF MILE ROUTE (4 KILOMETRES), FROM WESTMINSTER, UP WHITEHALL TO TRAFALGAR SQUARE, WHERE ANOTHER HERO, ADMIRAL LORD NELSON, IS COMMEMORATED ATOP A LOFTY COLUMN.

THE CROWDS STOOD MOTIONLESS.MIDDLE-AGED MEN - CLERKS, BAKERS SALESMEN, REMEMBERED THE DAYS WHEN CHURCHILL TURNED THEM INTO FIGHTERS OF DARING IN THE DESERT, ON THE BEACHES, AND IN THE AIR, AS THE CORTEGE PASSED BY.

BEHIND THE TROOPS OF THE THREE SERVICES CAME A LONG LINE OF SAILORS PULLING ON WHITE ROPES THAT DREW THE GUN CARRIAGE.THEN CAME HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES BEARING THE WOMEN MOURNERS.

THE WIDOW, LADY CHURCHILL, AND HER TWO DAUGHTERS WERE IN THE FIRST, DRIVEN BY A RED CLOAKED COACHMAN AND RED-CLOAKED POSTILIONS.

THEN CAME THE MEN OF THE FAMILY, IN BLACK TOP HATS AND MORNING DRESS, WALKING BEHIND THE COACHES.IN FRONT WAS SIR WINSTON'S SON, RANDOLPH, AND HIS GRANDSON, WINSTON.

DOWN THE STRAND SWUNG THE TROOPS WITH THE BANDS PLAYING CONTINUOUSLY BECAUSE SIR WINSTON IN PLANNING HIS FUNERAL, HAD ORDERED: "LET THERE BE PLENTY OF MUSIC".

THEY CAME PAST THE SAVOY HOTEL WHERE SIR WINSTON OFTEN DINED.THERE WAS A TABLE RESERVED FOR HIM AND TODAY, AT THE REQUEST OF THE HOTEL STAFF, IT WAS LEFT VACANT WITH ONLY A BOWL OF FLOWERS ON IT.

DOWN FLEET STREET, THE HEART OF THE LONDON PRESS, TRUNDLED THE COFFIN DRAWN BY ITS 98 SAILORS WITH 44 MORE ON THE DRAG ROPES BEHIND.HERE WAS ANOTHER PART OF THE CHURCHILL HISTORY FOR HE FIRST BECAME NATIONALLY KNOWN FOR HIS DARING EXPLOITS AS A WAR-CORRESPONDENT IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY.

THEN UP LUDGATE HILL TO ST.PAUL'S WHERE MONARCHS, PRIME MINISTERS AND PRESIDENTS WAITED REVERENTLY WITH BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH TO PAY A LAST TRIBUTE.

THE WHEELS OF THE GUN CARRIAGE HALTED, AND THE COFFIN WAS CARRIED UP THE STEPS OF THE GREAT CATHEDRAL BY EIGHT CAPLESS SOLDIERS OF THE GRENADIER GUARDS.

INSIDE A CHOIR SANG: "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE..." AS THE MILITARY PROCESSION WAS REPLACED BY THE CEREMONIAL OF THE CHURCH.

THE COFFIN ENTERED THE CATHEDRAL TWO MINUTES BEFORE ELEVEN.IT WAS PRECEEDED BY HERALDS, PURSUIVANTS, AND KINGS OF ARMS.THE HERALDS CARRIED CHURCHILL'S "ACHIEVEMENTS" - THE SWORD, THE SHIELD WITH HIS COAT OF ARMS, THE CREST AND THE SPURS, AND THE EMBLEM OF HIS KNIGHTHOOD.

THEN CAME THE EARL MARSHAL, THE DUKE OF NORFOLK, FOLLOWED BY THE PALL BEARERS, OLD MEN NOW, BUT ALL OF THEM WITH INTIMATE MEMORIES OF THE MAN WHO WAS THEIR LEADER.

THEY INCLUDED SIR ROBERT MENZIES, PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA; THE EARL OF AVON, WHO WAS SIR ANTHONY EDEN, CHURCHILL'S FOREIGN SECRETARY AND LATER SUCCEEDED HIM AS PRIME MINISTER; EARL MOUNTBATTEN, THE VICTOR OF THE LONG JUNGLE WAR IN BURMA; FIELD MARSHAL EARL ALEXANDER, THE COMMANDER OF THE WESTERN DESERT FIGHTING THAT TURNED THE COURSE OF THE WAR.

THE COFFIN WAS PLACED ON ITS BIER BEFORE THE ALTAR AND THE CONGREGATION - AMONG THEM SIX SOVEREIGNS, FIVE HEADS OF STATE, 16 PRIME MINISTERS - SANG BUNYAN HYMN "WHO WOULD TRUE VALOUR SEE..."
THE HYMNS WERE ALL PARTICULAR FAVOURITES OF SIR WINSTON.THE OTHERS WERE: THE AMERICAN "BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC", "FIGHT TO THE GOOD FIGHT", AND "O GOD OUR HELP IMAGES PAST".

THROUGHOUT THE SERVICE, CONDUCTED BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, QUEEN ELIZABETH AND HER HUSBAND, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, STOOD BY THE HEAD OF THE COFFIN WHICH ITSELF WAS SURROUNDED BY SIX TALL CANDLES MADE FOR THE FUNERAL OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON AND NOT USED SINCE.

THE LESSON WAS READ BY THE ARCHDEACON OF LONDON, ARCHDEACON 06 SULLIVAN, A NEW ZEALANDER.

FINALLY THE LAST POST WAS SOUNDED BY CORPORAL WILSON OF THE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY AND THE SERVICE ENDED.

THE COFFIN LEFT THE WEST DOOR OF ST.PAUL'S AT 11.50 TO REJOIN THE MILITARY PROCESSION ON ITS WAY TO TOWER PIER...
