Background: THE ROCKET FRANCE HOPES TO PUT UP A SATELLITE WITH HAD A STATIC TEST YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THE TEST TOOK PLACE IN A HEAVILY-GUARDED FOREST BORDERING THE SEINE, EAST OF PARIS.

THE ROCKET WAS ENCLOSED IN A GANTRY 150 FEET HIGH. NEARBY WAS A CONCRETE UNDERGROUND SHELTER WHERE TECHNICIANS USED PERISCOPES TO WATCH THE ENGINE TEST.

THE PRESSING OF THE IGNITION BUTTON BROUGHT THE ROCKET TO LIFE WITH A ROAR. HEAVY OIL SMOKE SWIRLED FROM ITS BASE AS THE ENGINES WARMED UP. AFTER 80 SECONDS, HEATING NEARED EXPLOSION POINT AND THE ENGINES WERE SWITCHED OFF. IN THOSE 80 SECONDS THE INTENSE HEAT MELTED A STEEL CONE THREE INCHES THICK PROTECTING THE TOP OF THE ROCKET.

FRANCE HOPES TO JOIN THE SPACE CLUB BY ORBITING A SATELLITE EITHER NEXT OR 1965. THIS ROCKET WILL ALSO BE USED TO PROBE THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE AND THE IONOSPHERE.

SECOND PART OF THE FILM SHOWS THE FIRST SHOTS OF THE NEW MYSTERE 20 JET ON DISPLAY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AT BORDEAUX ON THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD. THE MYSTERE IS DESIGNED FOR BUSINESSMEN. IT CAN CARRY EIGHT TO TEN PASSENGERS AND CRUISE AT 500 MILES AN HOUR OVER A 1,600-MILE RANGE.

IT'S POWERED BY TWIN PRATT & WHITNEY JET ENGINES SLUNG CARAVELLE-STYLE UNDER ITS TAIL. IT WILL HAVE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT NEXT MONTH.
