At the New York aquarium on Coney Island, a baby pygmy sperm whale - the only one in captivity - has been attacked and injured ... by a jealous sea lion.
The pygmy whale has been in captivity for only two weeks since being washed ashore with its mother. After the mother died, the baby was given only a twenty-five per cent chance of survival.
Trouble at the aquarium began when the baby whale started getting all the attention. The crowds which flocked to see the tiny whale, to a large extent ignored the nearby dolphins and sealions.
All the attention was too much for at least one of the sea lions - "Breezy". Last thursday (5 October) after an afternoon show, Breezy slipped through one of the aquarium gates and hipped the pygmy whale on the head and back.
The attack had come just as there were signs that the force-feeding of the whale was having some effect.
To ward off infection, the whale has been given large doses of anti-biotics, while "Breezy" has been put into isolation.
