Background: South Vietnamese forces have broken the 68-day-old siege of An Loc -- the provincial capital 60 miles north of Saigon along Highway 13.

On Sunday (11 June), helicopters flying from Lai Kho were still braving heavy ground fire to reach ARVN positions on the edge of the town. The supply gunships -- flown by Vietnamese pilots -- operate at tree-top level, flying in with supplies and bringing out wounded.

Many of the injured troops had been trapped inside An Loc since the start of the massive communist assault at the end of March. Others were wounded during the constant attacks on the relief column which took more than four weeks to fight its way up Highway 13 to the town.

There have been no estimates at the number of dead or wounded from An Loc. More than 5,000 shells are reported to have hit the town almost daily since the siege began and eye-witness reports say most of the town is now a mass of rubble.

The wounded South Vietnamese troops -- many of them about to receive their first medical treatment in two months were transferred to ambulances at Lai Khe and then driven further south to hospitals in Saigon.

Helicopters flying to An Loc still take ground fire from entrenched communist positions along the Highway north of Chon Thanh -- the machine Visnews cameraman Tran Huu Trong flew in to get this film was hit by small arms fire in two places.
