  • Description

Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike's left-wing United Front Coalition was voted into power on Wednesday (May 27) when over 5 1/2 million people voted in a General Election.

Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake's ruling United National Party suffered major defeats but the Prime Minister retained his own Parliamentary seat. Friends of Mr Senanayake who sent his resignation to Governor-General William Gopallawa on Thursday, said he was bewildered by the extent of the landslide which swept at least 10 of his Ministers out of Parliament.

Mrs Bandaranaike was elected the world's first woman Prime Minister in 1960 when she headed the Ceylonese government for four years.

On Wednesday, most of the country was peaceful as men and women formed queues at the polling stations to cast their votes. Once inside, officers daubed a finger of each voter to ensure that no one voted more than once. Voters retired behind a curtain to mark the candidates of their choice, then came out to cast their ballots into the box.
