  • Description

A treasure-mania prevails these days over the 112,000 inhabitants of Nea (New) Kios region and the beach of the Gulf of Argolis in the Peloponnese. Men, women and children -- day and night -- dig here and there searching for a big fortune hidden somewhere in the beach or the fields of the Nea Kios village. And this, following an information which has been widely spread all over the region of a hidden gold treasure.

It is true that during the dark days of the British retreat in 1941 through the Pelopennese, a British Sergeant of Jewish descent by the name of S. Smujak, attached then to the British G.H.Q., hid somewhere in the coast of Nea Kios some 600,000.00-drachmae worth treasure in banknotes and gold sovereigns (Lst. 700.000 appr.) belonging to the British Army. Sergeant Smujak came back to Greece on April 1957 and with special authority from the Government dug and searched the area for about 15 days but without success. And this, for owing to the erasion of the soil during the past 17 years, he couldn't locate the exact place he hid in hurry the treasure.

Now everyone wonders what has happened to this millions. Was the treasure found by Germans and was it taken to another place pending the end of the war? This is rather the opinion of the Greek Gendarmerie commandant. And this, for during October it has been reported to the Gendarmerie of Nea Kios that two jeeps in which there were two men and a woman speaking german, stopped in a deserted spot of the beach and after having put up a tent started digging. Villagers advised immediately the Gendarmes, but when they arrive the strangers had gone leaving a two-metre hole. The Germans reappeared two days later in another deserted spot of the coast, but again evaded arrest. It is believed that at least one of the occupant's of the jeeps served during the Nazi occupation of Greece in Nea Kios'area.

As far as Sergeant Smujak is concerned, he expressed his certainty that the treasure is still there, somewhere in the beach. This caused the treasure-mania of the inhabitants of the area of Nea Kios. Sergeant Smujak -- according to information reaching us -- plan to return again to search for the millions.
