  • Description

Tennis - and home champion Christine Evert's victory in the United States Open makes it the first time in a quarter of a century that the same has won the title three years in a row. Miss Evert accomplished the feat, by beating Australia's Wendy Turnbull at Forest Hills in New York on Saturday (September 10). The feat last achieved by the late Maureen Connolly between 1951 and 1953.

SYNOPSIS: But it was no easy victory for Miss Evert, who frequently found herself struggling against the relatively unknown Australian girl.

Evert six- Turnbull five in the first set. Turnbull serving, and losing point.

Miss Turnbull slipping behind - but not without a fight. She tirelessly went into long rallies, taking enough points to keep the American girl on her toes. Turnbull's point.

But the partisan home crowd were beginning to sense that Miss Evert - with her greater world - class experience and skill- was on the way to a win.

Match point - and while Miss Evert made no mistake about it in the end, the Australian challenger put up a sturdy finishing fight.

    The final score - 7-6, 6-2
