    In France, a top Chinese military delegation has been visiting Army, Airforce and Naval bases in between high-level talks with the French Government.

    SYNOPSIS: Comprising 15 members, including nine generals, the delegation is the first of its kind to visit the West since 1949. It is headed by General Yang Cheng-wu, the Chinese Armed forces Chief of Staff, who is one of Vice-Premier Teng Hsiao-Ping's right-hand men. On thursday (September 22), they were welcomed at Port en Bessin in Normandy, by a French naval delegation and shown around the base. The Chinese are spending ten days in France and their visit could lead to China buying French fighter aircraft and other defence equipment.

    The delegation were also shown the D-day landing Museum at Arromances. The team has met Prime Minister Raymond Barre, and Defence Minister, Yvon Bourges, and has held working session with the Chief of the French Armed Forces, General Guy Mery. The Chinese are particularly interested in the prototype Mirage 2000-claimed to be better at intercepting an aircraft like the Soviet MIG-25 Foxbat than any other. Chinese technical experts began talks with the Marcel Dassault aircraft Company at the Paris Air Show this summer.
