Background: South Yakutia is rich in minerals. Gas, oil tin, diamonds, gold, silver and coal have been found in the territory...
The Neryungri coal deposits...
The coal layer here reaches seventy metres.
This is only one of South Yakutia's coal deposits which are estimated to contain some 40 thousand million tons.
Last June a Soviet-Japanese agreement was signed on supplying Japan with South Yakutia coal. In return Japan will export to the Soviet Union plant, machinery and building materials.
This will boost coal production in the area.
Coal extraction in large quantities, in particular for exporting abroad, will begin by 1983.
At present much building work is going on in the Neryungri area.
The Yakutia Autonomous Republic of the Soviet Union is situated in the north-eastern Asian part of the country. It has an area of three million square kilometres.
Neryungri is a workers' settlement of the Aldan district of South Yakutia.
