    Commander Shepard, accompanied by his six fellow astronauts, flew from Grand Bahama Island to Andrews Air Force Base, May 8, to be greeted by his wife Louise and taken by helicopter to the White House.

    President Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline were waiting to welcome the successful spaceman.

    Then, in a brief ceremony, the President presented Commander Shepard with the Distinguished Service Medal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
