U.S. Navy A-4 "Skyhawks" from the carrier USS ORISKANY struck at rail and boat facilities?

  • Description

U.S. Navy A-4 "Skyhawks" from the carrier USS ORISKANY struck at rail and boat facilities in North Vietnam shortly before the carrier left its station in the Gulf of Tonkin January 12 for return to the United States.

During strikes on January 3, "Skyhawks" bombed a train some 55 miles south of Hanoi near the coastal town of Thanh Hoa. As seen in this first sequence, a secondary explosion caused a part of the train to burst into flames. At approximately the same time, more Navy pilots were raiding the Hung Yen boat yard about 20 miles southwest of Haiphong. Boats and pier facilities were heavily damaged in the attack.

The preceding day an ORISKANY Skyhawk fired rockets at a line of approximately 25 railroad box cars 45 miles south of Hanoi. Multiple impacts of the rockets can be seen.

January 4 found other Navy pilots attacking more railroad cars.

Multiple impacts of bombs strike targets 50 miles south of Hanoi.

In the final sequence, railroad cars and engines 80 miles south of Hanoi were hit by "Skyhawk" pilots. Once more, multiple impacts are seen as a jet fighter passes over the target.
