    ONE OF THE WORST FOREST FIRES IN SOUTH AMERICAN HISTORY IS RAGING OUT CONTROL IN PARANA STATE, BRAZIL'S RICHEST COFFEE-PRODUCING REGION.OVER 250 PEOPLE ARE REPORTED BURNED TO DEATH AND 300,000 ARE HOMELESS.

    FANNED BY STRONG WINDS, THE BIGGEST FIRE IS RAGING OUT OF CONTROL THROUGH PINE FORESTS AND COFFEE PLANTATIONS AT FRIGHTENING SPEED.FIRE-FIGHTERS BURNING FIRE-BREAKS AHEAD OF THE BLAZE HAVE BEEN ENCIRCLED AND TRAPPED BY THE FLAMES.

    NEARLY 500 SERIOUSLY INJURED VICTIMS, INCLUDING MANY CHILDREN, HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AS NURSES AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL AID POURS IN FROM BORDERING STATES.

    THE STATE OF PARANA HAS SUFFERED SEVERE DROUGHT FOR THE PAST SEVEN MONTHS.MOST OF NEXT YEAR'S COFFEE CROP HAS ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN OFF AS A TOTAL LOSS.
