    Up to 1967, many Jordanians from the East Bank used to travel to Jerusalem to pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque - the third most holy shrine in the Muslim world. But since the Israeli occupation of Old Jerusalem, the Grand Mosque in Amman has increased in importance.

    SYNOPSIS: In Jordan, thousands of worshippers gathered in Al-Hussein Grand Mosque on Friday to join together in prayer to mark the last day of the fast of Ramadan.

    In Muslim countries throughout the world, these scenes were repeated on Friday as the faithful completed their observation of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

    The Grand Mosque in Amman has increased in importance for the people of Jordan in the years since the 1967 June war. Up to that time, it was the custom for many from the East Bank of the Jordan to travel to Jerusalem to pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third most holy shrine in Islam, Since the Israeli occupation of the Old City, those who used to make the journey have turned instead to the Grand Mosque.
