  • Description

American pilot Richard Schreder, competing in the World Gliding Championships - take-off point Cologne, West Germany - who drifted into East Germany while trying to reach the island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea, was returned to the West at Lubeck frontier post, June 8.

Reporters, and his wife Angie, were on hand for Schreder's return -and Angie ran across the border to give her husband a welcoming kiss. The lost flyer had been in East German hands for only 24 hours; he said he was questioned for 4 hours, well-treated, and given food and drink.

June 5, Schreder was third in the Open Class gliding competition. Poles took the first two places, averaging 47 m.p.h.
