Background: Ghana's Head of State Colonel Ignatius Acheampong opened a new ceramics factory at Saltponds in the Central Region of Ghana on Wednesday (November 21st). The factory, which uses hardly any imported materials, will eventually produce the country's total requirements for wall tiles, sanitary ware, crockery and low tension insulators.

In his opening speech, Colonel Acheampong said that he was especially happy that the factory had been sited in accordance with the government's dispersal of industry policy and that 90 per cent of its raw materials were located in the region. So many factories, he pointed out, were mere assembly plants for foreign materials. He complained, however, that it had taken nine years to set up, and suggested that the eight investment bodies involved should work faster to avoid "embarrassment and frustration". At full capacity, the Saltponds Ceramic Company will be producing annually 1, 500 tons of wall tiles, 600 tons of sanitary were, 600 tons of crockery and 50 tons of low tension insulators.
