  • Description

THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED THE SUSPENSION OF SURVEY OPERATIONS IN THE SUEZ CANAL, FOLLOWING AN EXCHANGE OF FIRE WITH ISRAEL: ARTILLERY BATTERIES. ACCORDING TO AN EGYPTIAN MILITARY COMMUNIQUE, THE SURVEY WAS PART OF AN OPERATION TO FREE 15 FOREIGN SHIPS, TRAPPED IN THE CANAL SINCE THE OUTBREAK OF THE MIDDLE EAST WAR, LAST JUNE.

THE COMMUNIQUE SAID THE ISRAELIS, STATIONED ON THE EASTERN BANK OF THE CANAL, OPENED FIRE ALONG THE WATERWAY. THE AUTHORITATIVE CAIRO DAILY, AL-AHRAM, SAID ONE EGYPTIAN CIVILIAN WAS KILLED AND SIX PEOPLE, THREE OF THEM SOLDIERS, WERE WOUNDED IN THE EXCHANGE.

A STATEMENT BY THE EGYPTIAN ARMED FORCES COMMAND, BROADCAST OVER RADIO CAIRO, SAID THE FIRING STOPPED AT THE REQUEST OF THE UNITED NATIONS SUPERVISION ORGANISATION IN THE AREA.

THE FOREIGN MINISTRY DID NOT INDICATE HOW LONG THE OPERATIONS WOULD BE DELAYED, BUT SAID THE ISRAELI ATTACK FORCED THE DECISION.

AUTHORITIES LATER SHOWED NEWSMEN A DAMAGED VESSEL AND SHELL MARKS ON A SUEZ CANAL BUILDING, ALLEGED TO HAVE RESULTED FROM THE EXCHANGED OF FIRE.
