  • Description

Israel's border with Lebanon has always been its most peaceful - but the present civil war in the Lebanon has changed that.

The Lebanese have never taken part in earlier Arab-Israeli wars, and they have resisted all pressure to have Arab missiles on their land.

The Israelis have always had minefields and patrols on their north-west frontier with Lebanon only to keep out Palestinian guerrillas, but now there is a new threat. The fighting between Christians and Moslems in the Lebanon would not appears to have any particular affect on Israel -- but the Palestinians fighting on the Moslem side have recently been reinforced by 20,000 Palestinian Liberation Army troops, trained and paid by the Syrian government, Israel's greatest enemy at the moment.

There has been no sign of any of these Syria paid troops near the border, just occasional patrols by the small Lebanese army, but the Israelis are worried that the temporary presence of the Syrian trained PLA troops in the Lebanon may become a permanent one -- and they are taking no chances.

The Lebanese border country stretches from the west flank of Mount Hermon to the sea. It is highland with a commanding view over Israel's neighbouring northern valley ad to combat the possibility of any large scale PLA presence Israel has increased its forces around the border and put them on grater alert. So the Lebanese who have lived peacefully for many years in sight of the Israelis now find they are receiving as much attention from Israeli troops as Israel's long standing enemies to the south and east.
