Background: Tom Okker of Holland upset top-seeded Ilie Nastase of Rumania 6-3, 6-4 to win the men's singles final of the Dewar Cup Indoor Tennis Tournament at London's Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night (17 November). Okker's victory also brought with a winners's purse of 3,000 around sterling.

Okker, second seeded for the tournament, scored his fourth victory in meetings with the stylish Rumanian this year. He disclosed after wards that his win came despite an injured wrist, which was receiving treatment just before the match.

The ultra sonic treatments seemed to have worked, as Okker out-classed Nastara, who seemed somewhat subdued after a brilliant three-set victory over the U.S.A's Jim Connors Friday night (16 November).

Nastase, however, denied that he felt tired. "Last night every ball I hit named to go into court, but tonight nothing would go right," he explained.

The tournament counted towards the Commercial Union Grand Prix, which Nastase has already clinched. Okker consolidated his hold on second place with his victory.

SYNOPSIS: Top-seeded Ilie Nastase of Rumania serves to Tom Okker of Holland in the men's singles finals of the Dewar Cup indoor tennis tournament in London, on Saturday night.... Nastase indicated to Okker that he should have been playing further over to return that shot.

But it was Okker who led throughout the first set, despite some fine rallies by the stylish Rumanian.

Even playing with an injured wrist, Okker controlled the play. Here he serves for set point.

Okker took the first set 6-3. It was for the second set too decide if Nastase could begin to recover his control. There were three break games in the second set. Nastase had the early advantage, but Okker broke back with deceptively tough and controlled playing. Okker serves to take the lead.

Nastase was showing none of the fire that had been evident the night before when he beat Jim Connors to reach the finals....Okker serves set and match point.

For Okker, an impressive 6-3, 6-4 two-set upset victory over Nastase... For Tom Okker, his win meant a purse of three-thousand pounds, and the Dewar Cup trophy, presented by Lady Dewar.
