  • Description

IN COMMON WITH MOST ALGERIAN CITIES, ALGIERS CAME TO A STANDSTILL OCTOBER 2 WHEN VIRTUALLY ALL EUROPEAN SHOPS AND CAFES CLOSED, AND OFFICES, BANKS, AND FACTORIES STOPPED WORK IN RESPONSE TO THE CALL FOR A THIRTY-MINUTE STRIKE BY THE RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST ORGANISATION OF THE SECRET ARMY IN PROTEST AGAINST PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S POLICY FOR THE FUTURE OF ALGERIA.

FORBIDDEN TO STRIKE UNDER "REQUISITION" ORDERS, SOME EUROPEAN WORKERS IN THE ADMINISTRATION, TRANSPORT AND PUBLIC SERVICES SHOWED THEIR SYMPATHIES BY WORKING SLOWLY.

STRONG SECURITY FORCES WERE OUT IN THE CITY CENTRE, WHERE THE MAIN THOROUGHFARES WERE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC NEARLY ALL DAY. A POSSIBLE DISTURBANCE WAS HALTED SUDDENLY, WHEN NOISY CROWDS OF YOUTHS WERE DISPERSED BY A TORRENTIAL RAIN SHOWER. OTHERWISE THE DEMONSTRATION PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY. THE ONLY REPORT OF A DEMONSTRATION CAME FROM ORAN, WHERE THE STRIKE ENDED WITH SOME 30,000 PEOPLE MARCHING THROUGH THE STREETS, SHRIEKING THE O.A.S. SLOGANS AND BRANDISHING IMPROVISED FLAGS BEFORE DISPERSING WITHOUT CLASHING WITH POLICE.
