Lufthansa's flight 502, from Hamburg to Buenos Aires, via Rio and Sao Paulo, crashed at Rio's international airport while preparing for a normal landing. Causes up to now are unknown, but it is believed that either the altimeters were not operating correctly, or else the veteran pilot made his first serious mistake. Two special investigating committees, one appointed by the Brazilian Government, and one sent over from Germany by Lufthansa are going over all the details, in order to determine the cause for the crash. Casualties: 36 dead, 3 wounded.
Among the dead were Count and countess Kottulinsky, relatives of the brazilian imperial family (Orleans e Braganca). The 3 survivors are navigator Hans Jeppel, stuart Karl Himez and stewardess Hilde Dehler. Up to this moment they are being held incommunicado at Rio's HOSPITAL DOS ESTRANGEIROS. (Foreigners hospital).
Also among the dead is one famous Sao Paulo physician, Dr. Pedro Souza Campos, who was returning from a specialization course he had taken in Germany. Also killed at the crash REUTER's GARI LEVY, head of the agencies operations in Latin America.
