    Syrian troops have taken over the first area on the Golan Heights front, evacuated by Israel following the recent Middle East ceasefire and disengagement agreement.

    The area south of the Syrian town of Saasa covers about 60 square kilometers (about 35 square miles) of the bulge captured by israel during the Middle East was last October. The Israelis handed over the area to the United Nations troops on Friday (14 June) and the syrians moved int he following day.

    This completed the first phase of separation of forces under the disengagement agreement.

    The second phase of the separation is due to be completed by Wednesday (19 June). The Israelis will hand over the bigger area of Undof on Tuesday (18 June).

    The Israelis have been blowing up all installations of military value before pulling out. But much of the debris of war still litters the area that has always been of great strategic significance to both sides in the conflict.

    The area will eventually form part of the second Syrian limited forces zone in which they will be allowed to have up to 450 tanks, Between that and the Israelis will be a United Nations controlled buffer zone.

    SYNOPSIS: This is the new Syrian front line on the Golan Heights following the Israeli withdrawal.

    It encloses an area of thirty five square miles south of the Syrian town of Saasa.

    The Israelis have been blowing up their military installations in all the territory to be handed over under the separation of forces agreement. Yet the debris of war is still all around. This area was captured by the Israelis in fierce fighting last October.

    The hand over of this area marked the end of the first phase of the separation of forces. The Israelis are due to hand over a much larger section of captured territory to the United Nations this Tuesday. The Syrian forces will move in the next morning.

    The Syrian armed will eventually turn this area into a limited forces zone which they will be allowed to have up to four hundred and fifty tanks.
