  • Description

Janet Newberry won the women's singles title at the British Hard Court Tennis championships in Bournemouth on Sunday (18 May).

Miss Newberry, from California, beat Terry Holiday, a fellow Californian, 7-9, 7-5, 6-3.

For a long while Miss Holiday, a 19-year-old lefthander, appeared likely to win her first major title. Her double-fisted backhand was sharp and effective and her aggressive forehand got her several quick points, and until 3-2 in the second set she had the edge.

The Miss Newberry began to attack her backhand. The tactic scored heavily and she was soon assured of the title.

Miss Newberry, a member of the American Federation Cup teams this year, has greater experience than Miss Holiday.

In the semi-final for Men's Singles France's Patrick Proisy beat New Zealand's Onny Parun 6-4, 6-1.
