Background: Bangkok is making last-minute preparations for the Six Asian Games which open in the Thai capital on Wednesday. The 11-day Asian Olympics will bring together more than 2,500 athletes from 18 countries.

Most of the athletes have already arrived and are now warming up in preparation for the 11-day event.

The main venue is the National Sports Complex, where the main stadium, two gymnasiums and the hockey and swimming stadiums are situated. It is here where the opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

The biggest drawcard is certain to be the outstanding Taiwan athlete Chi Cheng who is regarded as the fastest woman in the world. While she is expected to dominate the woman's track and field events, the Japanese are once again favoured to grab the biggest medal haul.

Thailand has the distinction of being the only country to host the Games twice - a distinction it did not ask for. Bangkok, the 1966 venue, was stage the 1970 Games after Seoul, the original host, said it was unable to.
