  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA TOLD AN AIRPORT RALLY IN LUSAKA YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) THAT UNLESS ANY UNITED NATIONS TRADE SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA INCLUDED OIL, ZAMBIA WOULD WASH ITS HANDS OF THE MATTER AND "USE SOME OTHER METHOD" AGAINST RHODESIA. THE PRESIDENT WAS SPEAKING ON HIS RETURN FROM A THREE-WEEKS WORLD TOUR WHICH INCLUDED VISITS TO THE UNITED SATES, CANADA, JAMAICA, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, GUYANA AND CHILE.

IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT KAUNDA ACCUSED THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. HAROLD WILSON, OF EXCEEDING THE NOVEMBER TIME LIMIT SET AT THE LAST COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE FOR THE RHODESIAN ISSUE TO BE TAKEN TO THE UNITED NATIONS. "NOW WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK: 'HAS THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER TAKEN HIS CASE TO THE UNITED NATIONS?'" HE SAID.

ON THE QUESTION OF SOUTHERN AFRICA GENERALLY, THE ZAMBIAN LEADER SAID THAT AFRICAN NATIONALIST FREEDOM FIGHTERS FROM SUCH COUNTRIES AS RHODESIA AND SOUTH AFRICA WERE BEING TRAINED IN OTHER AFRICAN STATES OR ABROAD FOR FUTURE CONFLICT. WHEN THE EXPLOSION TOOK PLACE, HE SAID, THERE WOULD BE A NORTH-SOUTH, BLACK-WHITE CONFLICT AND ALSO AN IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICT BETWEEN EAST AND WEST THAT AFRICAN DID NOT WANT.
