OHTAKA: "Mr. Chairman, it is impossible for me to conclude my statement without referring to the hijacking form Amsterdam a few days ago of a Japan Airlines 747 jet plane en route form Paris to Tokyo. Quite fortunately, thanks to the patient and careful handling of this matter by the authorities of the countries concerned, the passengers and crew have escaped grave injury. This recent hijacking stresses once more the seriousness of the problem and the urgency of the elaboration and adoption of effective measures at the national as well as international levels. The Government of Japan strongly reaffirms its determination to cooperate to the fullest possible degree in the efforts of the international community to combat and eradicate international terrorism. Background: A United Nations ad hoc committee dealing with international terrorism was told by the Japanese delegate on Wednesday (25 July) that effective measures should be taken at a national level to stop terrorism.

The delegate, Mr. Tadashi Ohtaka, told the U.N. committee that national measures should include supplying other countries with information about acts of terrorism and about the perpetrators.

He said the hijacking of the Japanese Airlines Boeing 747 jet last week was a further indication of the seriousness of the problem.
