  • Description

TODAY (SUNDAY) WAS REMEMBRANCE DAY IN BRITAIN, AND OFFICIAL CEREMONIES LED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH WERE FOLLOWED BY A SPECIAL WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY FOR RHODESIANS WHO DIED DURING THE TWO WORLD WARS. THE SPECIAL SERVICE WAS STRICTLY UNOFFICIAL, AND IT ENDED WITH A NOISY DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE MR. HAROLD WILSON'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE IN DOWNING STREET.

THE REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY WAS STAGED BY SUPPORTERS OF THE ILLEGAL REGIME IN RHODESIA. IT WAS AT THE CENOTAPH IN WHITEHALL, WHERE THE QUEEN HAD EARLIER LAYED A WREATH. AMONG THE SPECIAL GUESTS HONOURING RHODESIAN WAR DEAD WAS LORD SALISBURY, A FORMER BRITISH MINISTER AND A PROMINENT SUPPORTER OF MR. IAN SMITH. BUT A BRITISH MILITARY BAND HAD CANCELLED PLANS TO PLAY AT THE SERVICE AND AN ANGLICAN PRIEST HAD WITHDRAWN FROM THE SERVICE AFTER BEING ACCUSED OF BEING A RACIST.

THE QUIET DIGNITY OF THE WREATH LAYING ENDED WITH MR. SMITH'S SUPPORTERS MOVING THE SHORT DISTANCE ALONG WHITEHALL TO DOWNING STREET. THERE THEY CONFRONTED A STRONG POLICE GUARD OUTSIDE NUMBER 10, THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE. EXTRA POLICE ARRIVED, AND A CORDON BLOCKED THE DEMONSTRATORS' WAY ALONG DOWNING STREET AS THEY CHANTED "WILSON OUT, SMITH IN." THE DEMONSTRATION ENDED PEACEFULLY, AND THERE WERE NO ARRESTS.
