    Christy O'Connor, 44-year-old British Ryder Cup player from Dublin, broke the day-old course record with a dazzling six-under-par 65 in the second round of the GBP30,000 sterling British open golf championship on the 6,848 yard (6.259 metre) Royal Lytham St. Anne's course today (Thursday).

    O'Connor's brilliant display left him one stroke behind the leader New Zealand left-hander Bob Charles, who having set the pace overnight with a course record of 66 followed this up today with 69 for a 36-hole halfway total of 135.

    British golfers Alex Caygill, who broke 70 in the championship for the first time with a 67, and 25-year-old Tony Jacklin (70) shared third place on 138.
