Background: FARNBOROUGH, UK & CAIRO, EGYPT

Egypt has agreed to buy 20 French Mirage 2000 combat aircraft in a one-billion dollar deal financed by the French government. Egypt will pay for the aircraft over six years, starting from 1983 when the first planes will be delivered. The deal was announced at the end of visits to Egypt by French Defence Minister, Charles Henru and External Relations Minister, Claude Cheysson. The Mirage 2000 -- the latest version of the highly successful Dassault-built aircraft -- had its public debut at the Farnborough Air Show in England in 1978. Scheduled for service in the French Air Force this year, the Mirage 2000 features advanced weapons and navigational guidance systems.
