  • Description

The United Nations has lifted economic sanctions imposed against Rhodesia fourteen years ago. The UN move followed the signing in London on Friday (21 December) of a peace treaty ending the guerrilla war in the breakaway British colony. Rhodesia regained legal status with the arrival last weekend (15/16 December) of a British Governor, Lord Soames, to supervise preparations for independence early next year.

SYNOPSIS: Security Council President Chen Chu summed up Friday's long meeting. The resolution the fifteen nations voted on gives Secretary Genera Kurt Waldheim the responsibility of organising international aid for reconstruction and refugee repatriation. It also called on Britain -- as administering power -- to expel and keep out all South African Forces and foreign mercenary fighters. The resolution was finally adopted by thirteen votes to none, with the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia abstaining.

After the vote, Dr. Waldheim addressed the council....
Zambian delegate Paul John Firmino spoke on the elections....
Nigerian delegate B. Akporode Clark was concerned about Rhodesia's near future now the territory has been returned to legality....
