  • Description

Helmeted riot police, using truncheons and shields repeatedly charged angry demonstrators in Paris today (Wednesday). They finally used tear-gas to break up a students demonstration over the trial of two left-wing extremists.

The student first blocked a road outside the Fine Arts School, stopping traffic and calling for the liberation of the two men under-going trial at the nearby Central Law Courts. But the main clash was at the Science Faculty in the Latin Quarter.

The two men - Jean-Pierre le Dantec and Michel le Bris - had been accused of incitement to crime, justification of murder and other offences. They are both former editors of a magazine called "The People's Cause" - an organ of the extreme Proletarian Leftist group. The French Government today ordered the group - described by Interior Minister Raymond Marcellin as the most dangerous extreme-left movement in France - to be dissolved.

The students hurled stones at the police but the tear-gas drove them back into the Science building.

The Government decision reflected President Georges Pompidou's declared determination to take strong action against any extremist groups.
