  • Description

President Anwar Sadat returned to Egypt on Monday (21 November) after his historic visit to Jerusalem.

SYNOPSIS: President Sadat arrived in Cairo less than an hour after leaving Jerusalem. As he stepped from his plane, the television commentator said: 'Time man of peace has arrived'.

The President was greeted immediately by a young girl who presented him with a bouquet of flowers. Nearly the entire Egyptian military and political hierarchy waited in line to greet Mr. Sadat at the airport. They included Egypt's Vice-President, Hosni Mubarak and the Prime Minister, Mamdouh Salem. Both embraced the President.

President Sadat then drove in an open car through the streets of Cairo. He was given a hero's welcome by thousands of people lining the route. An estimated 4,000 security men and police were needed to hold back the crowds, who included peasants from villages outside Cairo. Many had ridden kilometres on horseback for the welcome.

At strategic points on the drive to the Presidents's suburban residence bands played welcoming tunes and people danced as the motorcade passed by.
