    SPAIN HAS THREATENED TO TAKE ACTION "DAMAGING MOST DIRECTLY THE INTERESTS" OF GIBRALTAR IF ROYAL NAVY OFFICERS CONTINUE TO BOARD SPANISH SHIPS ANCHORED IN THE BAY OF ALGERICAS. THE SPANISH NOTE WAS PROMPTED BY THE ACTION OF ROYAL NAVY COMMANDER G.M.K. VALLINGS, WHO BOARDED THE SPANISH HEAVY FRIGATE "HERNAN CORTES" LATE LAST SATURDAY EVENING.

    THE SPANISH HEAVY FRIGATE WAS REPORTEDLY ANCHORED ABOUT 100 YARDS (90 METRES) INSIDE BRITISH TERRITORIAL WATERS IN THE BAY OF ALGERICAS. WITH HER, BUT IN SPANISH WATERS, WERE THE FRIGATE LEGAZPI AND THE DESTROYER ALMIRANTE FERRANDIZ. THE DESTROYER WAS FORMERLY THE UNITED STATES SHIP DAVID W. TAYLOR.

    COMMANDER VALLINGS, CAPTAIN OF HER MAJESTY'S DOCKYARD IN GIBRALTAR, SPOKE TO THE CAPTAIN OF THE HERNAN CORTES WHEN HE BOARDED THE SHIP ON SATURDAY NIGHT. HERNAN CORTES REMAINED IN GIBRALTAR WATERS UNTIL MONDAY MORNING.

    IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS AT LEAST THREE SPANISH FRIGATES ANCHORED IN THE BAY HAVE BEEN BOARDED AND TOLD THEY WERE IN BRITISH TERRITORIAL WATERS. EACH TIME THE SPANIARDS HAVE INSISTED THAT THEY WERE IN THEIR OWN WATERS.
