    U.S. helicopters, damaged by Viet Cong fire while on missions in Vietnam, are returning to action in record time due to the Floating Aircraft Maintenance Facility at Cam Rahn Bay.

    The facility is the USNS CORPUS CRISTI BAY equipped with aircraft maintenance shops operated by military personnel of the 1st Transportation Corps Battalion. The ship itself is maintained by a crew of civilian personnel of the Military Sea Transport Service.

    Established in October of 1964, the 1st Transportation Corps Battalion is the first activity of this type in the U.S. Army. The battalion is made up of career soldiers who operate as full-time aviation technicians aboard the ship. The unit consists of 19 officers, 11 warrant officers and 350 enlisted men.

    Aircraft maintenance capability of the facility consists of airframe repair, aircraft engine overhaul ??? various other repair and test operations.

    The facility at Cam Rahn Bay in playing an important role in getting helicopters back into operations with a minimum of delay in maintenance repair.
